The Porch’s Write-A-Thon

Write-a-Thon at The Porch: September 2026
Write for a Cause. Write for Yourself.

This September, join us at The Porch for a month-long writing challenge that not only strengthens your writing habit but also supports a great cause: scholarships for future classes at The Porch!

Set a writing goal, whether it's writing 30 pages, 30 hours, or 30 poems… or come up with your own personal target. Throughout the month, you can track your progress, share wins, and get support from fellow writers. Plus, you’ll have the option to meet in person on Tuesday nights at The Porch House for dedicated writing time (with prompts and encouragement from your fellow writers). If you can’t make it in person, join our digital space where writers from all over can share prompts, progress, writing nooks, and offer brags and encouragement along the way.

While you’re focused on your writing goals, your registration fee of $30 (with sliding scale options) will help fund scholarships for writers like you, making The Porch’s future classes accessible to everyone. This year, we’re aiming to raise $5,000 through this Write-a-Thon, and we need YOU to help us get there. Write your heart out! Your participation will make a difference.

Writing the Illness Memoir: A Diversifying Writers Class (Online)

In this 8-session class, we will explore different methods of writing about our experiences with illness.

From science writing to historical fiction and diaries to essays, there are a multitude of approaches to writing about illness. Weekly readings will provide examples of these approaches. Writing exercises will guide us through ways we might incorporate these techniques into our own writing.

Approaches covered include using archival research, writing the personal essay, and forms like prose poetry and diary entries. As we explore a variety of techniques, we will learn how our experiences of illness can be contextualized, and the many ways we can tell our own stories.

Readings will include work by Audre Lorde, Susan Sontag, Virigina Woolf, Alphonse Daude, Anne Boyer, and others.
